About this pattern

A top-down bucket hat with a 9-round crown, a 6-round V-stitch body, and an 8-round brim, worked in Yarn Art Jeans with a 2.5 mm hook. The crown increases to 48 DC by Round 4; the body sets 18 V-stitch groups in Round 10; the brim increases from 120 to 132 stitches across Rounds 17-19. No assembly steps are needed beyond weaving in ends.

This bucket hat builds top-down: a 9-round crown worked from a magic ring, a 6-round body defined by V-stitch clusters and a chain-5 mesh round, and an 8-round brim that climbs from 120 to 132 stitches before holding steady. The crown's Round 4 lands at 48 DC, giving an early checkpoint for the flat circle. Worked in Yarn Art Jeans with a 2.5 mm hook, the 132-stitch brim count is the number that decides how much the edge flares.

Tester's notes

2.5 mm hook holds the DC and V-stitch clusters tight enough that the ch-1 spaces in Round 3 stay visible without gaping.

Round 1 starts with a magic ring, not a chain ring; pull the center tail firm before working the chainless starting DC.

Round 10 sets up 18 V-stitch groups (2 DC, Ch 1, 2 DC); a stitch marker in the first group prevents drifting past the join before Round 11's ch-5 repeats.

Rounds 17, 19, and 21 each place increases at set intervals; miscounting one repeat shifts the spacing enough to show as a lump in the brim.

Yarn Art Jeans runs as a single color through this pattern with no color changes called for, so ends to weave in are limited to the round joins and the start and finish tails.

Gauge check

After Round 4, the crown should count 48 DC; treat that number as the gauge checkpoint since no swatch gauge is given.

If the count is off, the crown will not lie flat, so recount Rounds 1-3 rather than continuing into Round 5.

Stitch-count checkpoints

  • Hat Crown (Rounds 1–9) · Round 4: 48 sts
  • Hat Body (Rounds 10–16) · Round 14: 108 sts
  • Hat Body (Rounds 10–16) · Rounds 15–16: 108 sts
  • For Hat Brim (Rounds 17–24) · Round 18: 120 sts
  • For Hat Brim (Rounds 17–24) · Round 20: 132 sts
  • For Hat Brim (Rounds 17–24) · Round 22: 144 sts

If something looks wrong

The crown cups instead of lying flat after Round 4.
Round 4 should total 48 DC; a low count means an increase was skipped in Rounds 2-3. Rip back to Round 3, recount the 24 Ch-1 spaces, then rework Round 4.
The V-stitch groups in the body look
Round 10 depends on skipping exactly 2 stitches between each V-stitch group; an extra or missing skip shifts the repeat. Count the groups against the stated 18 Groups total before starting Round 11.
The brim flares wider than expected.
Rounds 17, 19, and 21 add increases that carry the stitch count from 120 up past 132. An extra increase worked by accident pushes the brim wider, so check the stitch total at the end of each round against the count given.
The join line at the end of a round looks jogged or stepped.
Every round joins with a slip stitch; working that SS into the wrong stitch after a Ch-1 or Ch-5 space creates the jog. Join into the same stitch as that round's starting DC, not the one after it.

Yarn substitutions

Cotton, DK weightKeeps the V-stitch texture crisp and holds brim shape without stuffing, but produces a slightly larger hat than Yarn Art Jeans at the same 2.5 mm hook; size up to 3 mm if the fabric feels stiff.
Acrylic, worsted weightDrapes softer and works up faster, but the 24-round hat will run noticeably larger; move to a 3.5-4 mm hook and check the crown against the 48-DC count at Round 4 before continuing.
Wool-blend, sport weightProduces a lighter, more pliable brim than Yarn Art Jeans, useful for a hat that folds flat for storage; stay at 2.5 mm or size down slightly since sport weight is thinner.
FAQs

Questions

Does the brim need blocking to hold its shape?

No blocking step appears among the 24 rounds; the brim's shape comes from the increases worked in Rounds 17, 19, and 21 alone. Check the fabric by hand after the last round rather than assuming a blocked outcome.

Can the hat be resized by adding or skipping rounds?

The crown's 9 rounds and the brim's 8 rounds are both built on fixed increase math, ending at 48 DC and 132 stitches respectively, so cutting a round breaks the count for every round after it. Resize by changing yarn weight and hook size instead of removing rounds from the 24-round total.
