The house style

Accessibility statement

Crochet Addiction is meant to be read at the kitchen table with a hook in one hand, by people of every age and eyesight. This page says what the site does to make that easy, and what to do when it does not.

What is built in

  • Text you can enlarge. Body text is never smaller than 17.5 pixels, with generous line spacing. The A / A+ control at the right-hand end of the masthead makes every page about an eighth larger again, and the browser's own zoom works on top of that.
  • Contrast that was measured, not guessed. Every colour of text against its background meets the WCAG AA ratio (4.5:1 for reading text, 3:1 for large headings). The gilt ornament is decoration and never carries words on parchment.
  • Big targets. Every link, button, chip and form field is at least 44 pixels tall, with space between neighbours.
  • Keyboard first. A "Skip to content" link is the first thing on every page. Every control shows a visible focus ring, the menu drawer traps focus while open and closes with Escape, and the newsletter result dialog does the same.
  • Screen readers. Pages use landmarks (navigation, main and footer), headings in order, labels on every field, and a live region that announces the result of a sign-up. Decorative ornaments are hidden from assistive technology.
  • Motion. Nothing moves on its own. If your system asks for reduced motion, the few hover transitions are switched off too.
  • Patterns you can follow. Every round ends with its stitch count in brackets, abbreviations are spelled out on the same page, and the instructions are plain text in US terms — no colour-coded steps, no italics for instructions, nothing you have to watch.

What is not perfect yet

Volume I is still at the bench, so nothing above has yet been tested against a set plate. When the first plates go in, each photograph will carry a written description and each round a description of what it looks like as well as what it counts — and this page will say so only once that is true of every plate, not before.

Tell Wren

If something on this site gets in your way — a colour that is hard to read, a control that does not work from the keyboard, a pattern that is hard to follow — please write to Wren or email hello@crochetaddiction.com. Say which page and what happened. Every letter is read and answered, and fixes go on the press the same week.
