About this pattern

This baby hat works from a joined chain of 62 in blue, giving 60 double crochets around after Round 1. A three-round ribbed brim of alternating front post and back post double crochets sets the stretch, then the main color takes over for a shell-stitch crown built from groups of three double crochets. Rounds 10 and 11 shape the crown closed with paired increases and a five-loop decrease join, and a pom-pom finishes the top. The 60-stitch count after Round 1 is the number to confirm before moving on.

The Ribbing

Getting Started Use a 4mm crochet hook and double-knitting (DK) yarn, with white as the main color and blue as the secondary color. Start with the secondary color (blue) and chain 62 for the 0-3 month size before joining into a round to work Round 1.

Round 1Skip the first three chains and double crochet into the fourth chain. Continue making one double crochet in each chain until you have 60 total double crochets (for the 0-3 month size). Join with a slip stitch.
Round 2Chain three, and then alternate between a front post double crochet and a back post double crochet all the way around. Join with a slip stitch.
Round 3Repeat the pattern from Round 2.
Round 4Switch to the main color (white) and repeat the front and back post double crochet pattern. Join with a slip stitch to finish the ribbing.

Main Pattern

Round 1Slip stitch into the space between the first three chains and the first front post double crochet.Chain three and make two more double crochets in the same space. Skip the next three double crochets and make three double crochets in the space between the third and fourth double crochets. Continue this "three double crochet in a space" pattern all the way around and join with a slip stitch.
Rounds 2–9Continue the same pattern of making three double crochets into each space from the previous round.

For the 0-3 month size, you will need a total of nine rounds of this pattern.

Assembly

Round 10Chain three and make one double crochet in the same space.
Step by stepMake two double crochets into each space all the way around. Join with a slip stitch.
Round 11Chain three, and then make a double crochet (leaving the last loop on the hook).
Step by stepIn the next space, make two double crochets (leaving the last loop on the hook for each), and pull the yarn through all five loops on the hook to join them. Continue this pattern all the way around and join with a slip stitch.
Last RoundChain one and make one single crochet into each of the stitches from the previous round.
FinishingJoin with a slip stitch and cut the yarn, leaving a long tail to close the hole. Use a needle to close the hole at the top of the hat and secure it with a knot.
Pom-PomAttach a pom-pom to the top of the hat. You can make a two-color pom-pom using a pom-pom maker, or use cardboard for a simple method.

Tester's notes

4mm hook and DK yarn hold the stated 60-stitch count; a smaller hook tightens the ribbing and may pull the brim too snug for the 0-3 month size.

60 double crochets after Round 1 is the checkpoint number — count before joining with the slip stitch, not after.

3 rounds of front post/back post double crochet form the ribbing; place a marker in the first stitch of each round so the alternating pattern doesn't drift out of sequence.

The color change from blue to white happens at the start of Round 4 — carry the blue yarn loosely inside the first few stitches of white to avoid a visible pull at the join.

the two-color pom-pom, wind each color onto its own half of the pom-pom maker or cardboard template so the split stays even before trimming and attaching to the crown.

Gauge check

After Round 1, count stitches around the joined circle and confirm 60 double crochets for the 0-3 month size before starting the ribbing rounds.

If the count is off, frog Round 1 and redo it rather than continuing, since every later round's stitch groups depend on that number dividing evenly.

If something looks wrong

The ribbing looks flat instead of textured.
Front post and back post stitches were likely worked into the top of the stitch instead of around its post. Rip back Round 2 or 3 and re-insert the hook around the post of each stitch, not through its top loops.
The joined circle after Round 1 doesn't match 60 stitches.
A skipped or doubled chain in the initial 62-chain throws off the count. Recount the chain before working Round 1, or frog Round 1 and rework it directly into each chain.
The crown cups instead of lying flat.
The Round 11 five-loop decrease join was likely worked too tightly, pulling the crown in faster than the increases from Round 10 spread it out. Loosen tension on the decrease loops and check that increases and decreases alternate as instructed.
A ridge or gap shows where blue meets white at Round 4.
This comes from joining the new color with a loose first stitch instead of a snug slip knot. Tighten the first white stitch after the join and weave the blue tail through a few stitches on the wrong side to hide the transition.

Yarn substitutions

Worsted weight cottonProduces a firmer, less stretchy ribbing than DK; move up to a 5mm hook to keep the 60-stitch Round 1 from drawing in too tight.
Chunky weight acrylicGrows the finished hat well past the 0-3 month size at the stated 62-chain start; drop the chain and stitch counts or size up materials only if a larger hat is wanted, and use a 6mm hook.
FAQs

Questions

Does this pattern work for sizes other than 0-3 months?

The chain count of 62 and the 60-double-crochet Round 1 are specific to the 0-3 month size. A larger size needs a longer starting chain and a stitch count that still divides evenly for the three-double-crochet groups in the main pattern.

Why does the main pattern use groups of three double crochets?

The three-double-crochet shell groups, worked into the spaces from the previous round, create the open, textured crown after the tighter ribbed brim. Skipping three stitches and working into the gap between groups keeps the shell spacing even all the way around.

How is the pom-pom attached to the crown?

The pom-pom is made separately with a pom-pom maker or cardboard template, then attached to the top of the hat after the crown is closed at Round 11. A two-color pom-pom can be made by winding both colors together on the same template before trimming.
