About this pattern

A crochet owl keychain made from two 3-round amigurumi discs, each starting with a magic ring and 8 double crochet, worked in a size 3 (baby weight) yarn with a 3.5 mm hook. Button eyes measuring 5/8 inch (15 mm) and an orange yarn beak finish the face. The two discs are sewn wrong sides together, stuffed, and closed with a keychain ring caught in the seam.

Main Pattern

Round 1Create a magic ring. Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet). Work 8 double crochet into the ring.Pull the tail to close the ring, leaving almost no space.Slip stitch to the first chain 3 to finish the round.
Round 2Change color to your next chosen yarn color. Work stitches between double crochets from Round 1. Start with a chain 2 (counts as first half double crochet). Work 2 half double crochet into each space between the double crochets around.

By the end of the round, you should have 16 half double crochet.

Slip stitch to the top of chain 2 to join.

Round 3Change color to your next chosen yarn color. Single crochet, chain 1, between each half double crochet around.

You should have 16 single crochet and 16 chain 1 spaces when finished.

Round 4Change color to your next chosen yarn color. In each chain 1 space, work 2 single crochet and chain 1.

By the end of the round, you should have 32 single crochet and 16 chain 1 spaces.

Round 5Change to your final yarn color. Work 3 single crochet in each of the next eleven chain 1 spaces (should have five chain 1 spaces left). For the next five chain 1 spaces, create the ears following the pattern: 3 double crochet into the next space.2 half double crochet into the next space.1 single crochet into the next space.2 half double crochet into the next space.3 double crochet into the last space.Slip stitch to join to the first single crochet of this round.
Final RoundTurn your work. Skip the first double crochet stitch. In the next stitches, work the following sequence to shape the ear: Single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, triple crochet, and then a set in reverse order (starting with the double crochet) to mirror the shape of the opposite ear.Slip stitch into the next stitch to finish the shaping.

Assembly

Step 1Make two pieces from the above pattern for the front and the back of the owl.
Step 2Sew on the buttons for eyes, add a beak with orange yarn.
Step 3Place wrong sides together and sew around the edge, leaving a gap for stuffing.
Step 4Stuff the owl and sew to close the gap.
Step 5Attach the keychain ring as you sew.

Tester's notes

3.5 mm hook is smaller than the original G hook; drop down a size further if stitches on size 3 yarn still look loose.

8 double crochet in round 1 sets the count every later round works from — recount before the slip stitch join to catch an off-count round early.

Round 2 works into the spaces between the 8 stitches from round 1, not into the stitches themselves; mark the first space with a scrap of yarn to keep track through the color change.

Tension should stay firm enough that the small amount of stuffing used does not show through gaps between stitches.

5/8 inch (15 mm) buttons for the eyes go on before the two discs are sewn together, since sewing through a closed, stuffed shape is harder to control.

Gauge check

After round 1, check that the 8 double crochet sit flat around the magic ring with no gap at the center and no cupping.

If round 1 cups or gaps, swap the 3.5 mm hook for a size up or down until the ring closes flat with no visible hole before moving to round 2.

If something looks wrong

The piece cups instead of lying flat after round 1.
The 8 double crochet were likely worked too tightly or the magic ring tail was not pulled fully closed; loosen tension slightly and pull the tail until no gap remains before the slip stitch join.
Round 2's stitch count looks off compared to round 1.
Round 2 works into the spaces between the 8 stitches from round 1 rather than into each stitch top, so counting tops instead of spaces throws the count off; recount by spaces.
The two discs do not match in size when
One disc likely has an extra or missing round, or a color change happened a round early; stack both discs after round 3 and recount rounds before sewing them together.
Stuffing shows through the seam after closing the gap.
Tension is too loose for the small amount of stuffing used, or the closing stitches are spaced too far apart; tighten the stitches at the gap and add stuffing in small amounts rather than one piece.

Yarn substitutions

Cotton, size 3 (light) weightHolds its shape better than acrylic through the tight 8 double crochet base and resists curling at the edges, but has less give, so the 3.5 mm hook may need stitches worked slightly looser to keep round 1 flat.
Acrylic, worsted (size 4) weightProduces a bigger keychain than the baby weight 3 size the pattern specifies, so the hook needs to size up from 3.5 mm to keep the 8-stitch round 1 from gapping, and more stuffing is needed to fill the larger discs.
Wool blend, size 3 (light) weightAdds drape and a softer surface for the face, but the fibers can stick together enough to hide a true stitch count, so round 1's 8 double crochet should be checked with a stitch marker rather than by eye.
FAQs

Questions

How many pieces does the owl keychain need?

Two identical pieces, each worked from the same 3-round Main Pattern, one for the front and one for the back. Both are made before any sewing or stuffing starts.

What size buttons work for the eyes?

The pattern calls for buttons measuring 5/8 inch (15 mm). Smaller buttons can be swapped in, but go much smaller than 15 mm and the eyes will look lost against the 8-double-crochet round 1 base.

Can a bigger hook be used instead of the 3.5 mm one?

The 3.5 mm hook is already a step down from the original G hook, chosen to make a smaller keychain. Going up a size produces a bigger charm and changes how much stuffing is needed, so check round 1 for gaps before committing to the rest of the piece.
