About this pattern

This amigurumi doll pattern uses a 4.5mm hook and chunky yarn to build a yellow body, two 7-round arms, two 6-round legs, and a 3-round hair cap with 16 individual strands. Arms attach to the torso during body Round 18, cutting down on sewing. A green dress with embroidered details covers the upper body, and safety eyes plus polyfil stuffing finish the construction.

Ms. Glee is a low-sew amigurumi doll built from a yellow body, two arms, two legs, and a hair cap topped with individually finished strands. Arms attach directly to the torso during body Round 18, avoiding a separate sewing step, while legs and arms are each worked in the round over 6 and 7 rounds respectively. The hair cap adds 3 rounds before its 16 strands are formed and finished separately, then sewn or glued to the head one at a time.

Tester's notes

4.5mm is the pattern's stated hook size; drop to a smaller hook if the chunky yarn lets stuffing show through the fabric.

16 hair strands come off Round 3 of the hair cap; sewing or gluing each one flat keeps them from sliding once attached.

Round 18 of the body is the low-sew join point for both arms — work it slowly so stitch placement matches on each side.

9 rows of Body plus 11 rows of Body Cont. mean color changes happen mid-torso; carry the unused color inside the work and knot ends before clipping.

6-round legs and 7-round arms are stuffed as the pattern directs — pack the arms up through Round 6 before closing the top.

Embroider the blue firework details onto the green dress right after finishing the dress rows, before the upper body becomes tightly packed with stuffing — it is much easier to stitch while there is still give in the fabric.

Gauge check

After Round 1 of the arms (6SC in MR) or Round 1 of the legs (8SC in MR), the ring should close flat with no visible gap at the center.

If something looks wrong

White stuffing shows through the yellow body fabric.
Caused by a hook too large for the chunky yarn; drop to a smaller hook to tighten stitches, or add an extra round of single crochet before stuffing.
Arms sit unevenly or twist after the
Stitch count drifted during the join round; recount stitches before attaching and match the same point on each arm to the torso.
Color changes leave loose strands or
Yarn was carried too loosely inside the work; carry it snugly along the inside and knot before trimming instead of cutting and rejoining each round.
Hair strands from the hair cap fall
Glue was applied too thin or sewing was skipped; use a firm dab of glue per strand or add a few tacking stitches at the base of each of the 16 strands.

Yarn substitutions

Acrylic chenille, chunky weightClosest match to the pattern's yarn; keeps the same soft drape and 4.5mm hook size, with easy stitch coverage for stuffing.
Cotton, worsted weightFirmer stitch definition and less give than chenille; size down the hook slightly for tighter fabric and check that gaps do not open under stuffing.
FAQs

Questions

What does the "2SC / ARM" instruction mean in Round 18?

This means you will hold the flattened top edge of the arm piece together with the next stitches of the body, crocheting through both the arm layers and the body layer simultaneously for 2 single crochets to attach it securely without sewing.

Can I use plastic safety eyes if this doll is for a toddler?

While safety eyes are standard for amigurumi items, they can still become a choking hazard for babies or very young children. For children under three, it is always safest to embroider the eyes using black yarn or embroidery floss.

Why do I need to flip the body upside down to add the skirt?

Flipping the doll upside down allows your half double crochet stitches to face outward correctly. Working into the leftover front loops of Round 13 ensures the skirt flares naturally away from the main legs and hips.

How do I make the hair strands curl less?

The hair strands are made by chaining and working single crochets back down the chain. If they curl up too tightly, you can gently press them flat with your fingers while applying a tiny bit of glue to secure them down to the head.

What is the purpose of working in the Back Loops Only (BLO)?

Working in the back loops leaves the front loops unworked and exposed. In Round 14, this leaves an exterior ridge on the body, which gives you the perfect row of front loops to attach the skirt later on.
