About this pattern

A lined crochet bag built from 18 rose-topped granny squares, worked with a G-6 (4.0 mm) hook in worsted-weight cotton across five colors. Each square grows from 12 to 60 dc over six rounds -- including a Color E picot leaf-accent round -- and carries a separate three-layer dimensional rose -- center coil, inner petal ring, outer petal ring -- stitched on after blocking squares to 4.5 by 4.5 inches. Cotton lining fabric and hand-sewing finish the piece.

This bag assembles from 18 granny squares, each built up through six rounds -- two rounds in Color D (lavender), two rounds in Color A (dusty rose), a Color E (sage) picot leaf-accent round, and a final Color A outer border round -- finishing at 60 dc, 4 corner spaces, and 16 ch-1 side spaces. Each square is then topped with a separate three-layer dimensional rose made from a Color B center coil, a Color C inner petal ring, and a Color A outer petal ring. Squares block to 4.5 by 4.5 inches before joining, and the finished bag measures approximately 14 inches wide by 15 inches tall with a 10 inch handle drop, lined with cotton fabric by hand or machine. Expect intermediate crochet skills and about 30 to 45 hours to complete the project.

Materials

  • Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Terracotta, Ecru, Blush, Lavender, and Fern works beautifully. This 100% mercerized cotton gives excellent stitch definition and is machine washable.
  • WeCrochet Dishie in Begonia, Cream, Peach, Iris, and Aloe offers a slight sheen that gives the finished bag a polished look.
  • Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK used doubled throughout is a budget-friendly option available in many colors.
  • Avoid 100% acrylic for this project. It will not hold the bag structure or the dimensional roses as crisply as cotton.

Yarn (Worsted Weight Cotton or Cotton Blend)

  • Color A (main dusty rose): approximately 1300 yards (1190 m)
  • Color B (cream/ivory): approximately 240 yards (220 m)

  • Color D (lavender/dusty purple for inner square ring): approximately 100 yards (91 m)
  • Color E (sage green for leaf accents): approximately 80 yards (73 m)

Hook

  • US size G-6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook

Notions

  • Yarn needle for weaving ends and sewing roses
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers

Optional

  • half yard (46 cm) of cotton lining fabric, coordinating thread, sewing needle or machine

Abbreviations

  • Granny Cluster = Yarn over, insert hook into indicated space, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops. Work two more double crochet into the same space in the same manner. You now have four loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all four loops. This is a 3-dc cluster worked into one space.
  • Scallop Stitch = Work 5 double crochet into the indicated stitch or space, skip the next 2 stitches, slip stitch into the next stitch. One scallop complete.
  • ch = chain: wrap yarn over hook and pull through loop on hook

  • sc = single crochet: insert hook, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through both loops
  • dc = double crochet: yarn over, insert hook, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops
  • hdc = half double crochet: yarn over, insert hook, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through all three loops
  • tr = treble crochet: yarn over twice, insert hook, pull up loop, (yarn over, pull through two loops) three times
  • ch-sp = chain space: the gap created by chains in previous rounds
  • sk = skip: pass over the indicated stitch without working into it
  • BLO = back loop only: work into only the back loop of the stitch
  • RS = right side: the side that faces outward when finished
  • WS = wrong side: the inside of the finished piece

Granny Square (Make 18)

Each square starts with Color D (lavender) for the center, transitions to Color A (dusty rose), adds leaf accents in Color E (green), and finishes with an outer border in Color A.

Round 1Color D Make a magic ring. Chain 3 (counts as first dc). Work 2 dc into ring. Chain 2. (Work 3 dc into ring, chain 2) 3 times. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3.Stitch count: 12 dc, 4 ch-2 corner spaces

(Work 3 dc into next ch-1 space, chain 1) twice. (Work 3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc into next ch-2 corner space, chain 1, (work 3 dc into next ch-1 space, chain 1) twice) 3 times. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off Color A.Stitch count: 48 dc, 4 ch-2 corner spaces, 12 ch-1 side spaces
Round 5Color E, Leaf Accent Round Join Color E with sl st into any ch-2 corner space. Chain 1. Work 1 sc into corner space. (Chain 3, sl st into second ch from hook to create a picot, 1 sc into next ch-1 space) across each side, working (1 sc, chain 3, sl st into second ch from hook to create picot, 1 sc) into each ch-2 corner space. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off Color E.

Result: Approximately 16 picot points total, 4 per side, creating leaf-like texture around the square

Round 6Color A, Outer Border Round Join Color A with sl st into any ch-2 corner space. Chain 3, work 2 dc into same corner space, chain 2, work 3 dc into same corner space. Chain 1. (Work 3 dc into next available space between clusters, chain 1) 3 times across each side. Fasten off Color A.Stitch count: 60 dc, 4 ch-2 corner spaces, 16 ch-1 side spaces

Block each completed square to 4.5 inches by 4.5 inches before joining.

Rose Center Coil (Color B)

The roses are worked as flat strips that you roll and stitch together. This technique is easier than it looks. Trust the process.

Chain 36.

Round 1(RS): Work 3 dc into the 4th chain from hook. Work 3 dc into each remaining chain across. Fasten off, leaving an 8-inch tail.Result: 33 clusters of 3 dc across a 33-chain length baseStarting at one end, tightly roll the strip around itself. Use the tail to stitch through the base of the coil several times to secure. This forms the tight cream center of the rose.

Inner Petal Ring (Color C)

Chain 52.

Round 1(RS): Sc into 2nd ch from hook. (Chain 3, sk 2 ch, sc into next ch) across. Stitch count: 17 ch-3 spaces, 18 sc
Round 2Chain 3, turn. Work (2 dc, hdc, sl st) into first ch-3 space. Work (sl st, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sl st) into each remaining ch-3 space across.

Result: 17 petals formed

Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch tail. Roll the petal strip gently so the petals face outward in a ring. Stitch through the base to secure. Attach around the outside of the Color B center coil using the tail, stitching firmly at the base.

Outer Petal Ring (Color A)

Chain 70.

Round 1(RS): Sc into 2nd ch from hook. (Chain 4, sk 2 ch, sc into next ch) across. Stitch count: 23 ch-4 spaces, 24 sc
Round 2Chain 1, turn. Work (hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sl st) into first ch-4 space. Work (sl st, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sl st) into each remaining ch-4 space across.

Result: 23 larger petals formed

Fasten off, leaving a 12-inch tail. Roll gently and attach around the outside of the inner petal ring in the same manner. The completed rose should measure approximately 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter.

Handle

Foundation Chain: Chain 11.

Round 1Sc into 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Turn. (10 sc)
Round 2Chain 1, sc into each sc across. Turn. (10 sc) Repeat Row 2 until handle measures 36 inches or desired length. Fasten off, leaving a 12-inch tail for sewing.

The handle is approximately 2.5 inches wide at 10 sc.

Handle Attachment

Position one end of the handle at the top-left corner of the bag front, centered over the seam. The handle end should overlap approximately 1.5 inches down into the interior. Stitch securely in place with Color A using whipstitch. Repeat at the top-right corner. The handle loops up and over to form a single shoulder strap.

Assembly

Step 1Wet-block each granny square before joining by soaking in cool water for 10 minutes. Gently squeeze out excess water without wringing. Pin to a foam blocking mat at 4.5 by 4.5 inch measurements. Allow to dry completely.
Step 2After assembly, lightly mist the exterior with water and smooth by hand. Do not pin over the dimensional roses. Allow to air dry completely.

Tester's notes

G-6 (4.0 mm) is the only hook size given; sizing down slightly firms up the 36 dc and 48 dc rounds if squares won't block to 4.5 by 4.5 inches.

The 4 corner spaces shift position each round as side spaces are added (4 after Round 2, 8 after Round 3, 12 after Round 4, 16 after Round 6); mark a corner at the start of each round to keep the join point straight across all 18 squares.

Color changes happen across six rounds per square -- Color D works Rounds 1-2 then fastens off, Color A works Rounds 3-4 then fastens off, Color E works the Round 5 picot leaf accents then fastens off, and Color A rejoins for the Round 6 outer border -- so weave in each tail before moving to the next color rather than batching them later.

Mercerized 100% cotton holds the 2.5 to 3 inch rose diameter and the squares' edges crisper than acrylic, which the materials list rules out for this reason.

None of the three rose layers (center coil, inner petal ring, outer petal ring) are stuffed; their shape comes entirely from tight rolling and stitching the 8-, 10-, and 12-inch tails through the base.

Gauge check

One completed granny square (through Round 5, before the rose is attached) should measure 4.5 inches by 4.5 inches (11.5 cm by 11.5 cm) blocked; 16 single crochet by 18 rows should equal 4 inches by 4 inches (10 cm by 10 cm) in single crochet with Color A and a G-6 hook.

Gauge matters here: if your squares are too small, the bag will be undersized, and if too large, you will run out of yarn. Make a test square first and adjust your hook size as needed.

If something looks wrong

The granny square cups or domes instead of lying flat.
Tension across the ch-2 corner spaces in the early rounds is too tight. Re-block the square pinned flat at 4.5 by 4.5 inches per the wet-blocking step, easing the corners open as it dries.
The dimensional rose sits unevenly or
The inner petal ring (17 petals) or outer petal ring (23 petals) was rolled unevenly before attaching. Unroll, re-center the petals facing outward, and re-stitch through the base with the fastening-off tail before sewing it to the square.
Losing track of the corner ch-2 spaces by Round 3 or later.
the round with 8, 12, or 16 ch-1 side spaces, corners are easy to miscount. Place a stitch marker in each of the 4 corner spaces at the start of every round before working into it.
Color joins look messy or tails show through at the corners.
Color D, A, and E are fastened off and rejoined at specific rounds rather than carried. Weave in each tail immediately after fastening off instead of leaving it for the end of all 18 squares.

Yarn substitutions

DK-weight cotton, held doubleApproximates the worsted-weight gauge from the G-6 hook at lower cost; drape is slightly softer, so block squares firmly to keep the 4.5 by 4.5 inch size.
Cotton-acrylic blend, worsted weightLowers cost further but the materials list specifically warns against pure acrylic; the 2.5 to 3 inch roses and bag structure hold shape less crisply, so stitch rose bases extra firmly.
Linen-cotton blend, DK weightAdds structure to the bag body without a separate lining layer, but the petal rows for the roses are stiffer to curl; size the hook down to keep stitch counts matching the pattern.
FAQs

Questions

How many granny squares does the finished bag need?

18 identical squares. Each works through six color rounds -- two in Color D, two in Color A, a Color E picot leaf round, and a final Color A border round -- finishing at 60 dc, 4 corner spaces, and 16 ch-1 side spaces before a dimensional rose is added and the square is blocked to 4.5 by 4.5 inches.

Can the roses be made ahead of the granny squares?

Yes. The center coil, inner petal ring, and outer petal ring each fasten off with their own tail (8, 10, and 12 inches), so all three layers can be rolled and stitched into a complete rose and set aside before any square is started.

Does this pattern require a fabric lining?

Yes. The materials list calls for half a yard (46 cm) of cotton lining fabric plus coordinating thread and a sewing needle or machine, used at assembly after the exterior is misted and smoothed flat around the roses.
