About this pattern

A bear-shaped amigurumi pouch for ear pods, worked in double crochet with a 3mm hook and sport weight cotton yarn. The main pattern increases to 10 stitches by row 2, two 12-chain hands hold embedded magnets for the closure, and decrease-shaped legs form at round 14. Separate pieces for the ears, a magic-ring nose, and a top cover are sewn on, and a side gusset of 5-12-5 double crochets per row, repeated through row 10, joins front to back before the bag gets sewn to the body.

This pouch is a flat-worked bear body with two chained-and-turned hands and a pair of decrease-shaped legs, assembled into an ear pod case with a side gusset, plus separately worked ears, a nose, and a top cover. Row 2 of the main pattern increases to 10 stitches, the hand sections start from a 12-chain on each side, and the side panel runs a 5-12-5 double crochet count per row through row 10. A magnet goes into each hand during assembly, giving the closure instead of a zipper or snap.

Materials

  • Sport weight cotton yarn
  • 3mm crochet hook
  • A needle
  • A pair of scissors
  • Black yarn (for sewing on the eyes and nose detail)
  • 2 magnets (for the hand closure)

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • inc = increase
  • dec = decrease
  • mr = magic ring
  • fo = finish off

Main Pattern

Row 1Start with 5 chains.Flip the chain and work in the back bump loop.
Row 2Make 2 chains and work double crochet increase in every stitch. (A special technique to avoid holes is described here: after the first double crochet, insert the hook into the side loop of it before starting the next stitch)

You will have a total of 10 stitches in row 2.

Rows 3–4Make two chains and turn. Double crochet in every stitch, securing the last stitch in a way that creates a flat edge.
Round 5After finishing the body, chain 12 on both sides to start the hand. Start with two chains then double crochet in every stitch. Work the double crochet into the back bump only of the chain section. Turn your work.
Round 6Repeat the same pattern as Round 5. You can cut off the yarn at the end of this round.
Round 7Start the first stitch in the 13th stitch. Start with two chains and work 1 double crochet increase, followed by 8 double crochet, then end with one double crochet increase. You should have 12 stitches in total.

Legs

Round 14Start with two chains. Work one double crochet decrease, followed by one double crochet, and then another double crochet decrease.Repeat the pattern for the second leg.Join both pieces together with a single crochet stitch along the edge.

Special Note: During assembly, insert a magnet piece in the hand section.

Ears

EarsMake 6 double crochet in one stitch, followed by 5 single crochet on top. Continue with single crochet along the edge.

Nose

NoseMake 12 double crochets in a magic ring and sew onto the body between rows 2 to 3.

Use black yarn to sew on the eyes and the nose detail.

Bag Base

BaseStart by crocheting 12 single crochets.
Rows 1–2For rows 1 to 2, make double crochet in every stitch.

Sides

Insert the hook into the side of the base, and start with 5 double crochets along the side.

Work 12 double crochets across the front and add another 5 double crochets along the other side.

Continue this pattern until row 10.

Top Cover

Top CoverInsert the hook and work eight single crochets on row 5 of the body, followed by the written pattern.
Row 1Do 20 chains, followed by one chain and 20 single crochets in row 1.

After completion, sew both onto the bag.

Assembly

Step 1Sew the bag to the body using leftover yarn.

Tester's notes

3mm hook should produce a snug fabric with the sport weight cotton; if stitches gap or the 10-stitch row 2 count looks loose, drop to a smaller hook.

10 stitches is the checkpoint after row 2 - recount before turning into rows 3 and 4 so the error does not carry forward.

12 chains start each hand; work the first row into the back bump only, not the front loop, to keep that chain edge from flaring once turned.

2 magnets are needed, one per hand, and go in during assembly before the hand sections close at round 14 - placing them after closing is not possible.

5-12-5 is the side panel's double crochet count per row, unchanged through row 10; check the tally every few rows since an early miscount compounds across all ten.

Gauge check

After row 2, count stitches around the main pattern: the pattern calls for exactly 10, and any deviation means an increase was skipped or doubled.

If the count is off, unravel back to row 2 and rework the increase round, inserting the hook into the side loop of each stitch before the next, since this is the step that keeps the stitch count accurate.

If something looks wrong

Row 2 does not reach 10 stitches after the increase round.
A stitch was likely skipped or merged during the increase, often from missing the side-loop step. Recount before row 3 and rework the increase round, inserting into the side loop of each first double crochet before starting the next.
A hole appears at the base of the increase round in row 2.
This happens when the side-loop technique is skipped. Insert the hook into the side loop of the previous double crochet before the next stitch, as the pattern directs, and pull the working yarn snug there.
The hand chain edge curls or flares instead of lying flat.
The first row of the hand was likely worked into the front loop of the chain instead of the back bump. Rip back to the 12-chain and rework row 1 into the back bump only.
One leg sits shorter or looks uneven after round 14.
The decrease-dc-decrease sequence was applied unevenly between the two legs. Check the stitch count after each decrease on both legs before joining them with single crochet.

Yarn substitutions

Fingering weight cotton or cotton blendDrop to a 2.5mm hook. The 10-stitch count in row 2 stays the same, but stitches run smaller, so the finished pouch shrinks and needs less stuffing in the body.
Worsted weight acrylicMove up to a 4-4.5mm hook. The 5-12-5 side panel stitches get bulkier, so fewer than 10 rows may be needed to reach the same side depth, and the fabric holds less drape than cotton.
DK weight wool or wool blendStep up to a 3.5mm hook. Drape softens compared to sport cotton, stuffing compresses more over time, and magnets should be wrapped in fabric before insertion to keep metal away from wool fibers.
FAQs

Questions

What keeps the pouch closed without a zipper?

Magnets are inserted into the hand sections during assembly, one per hand, so the bear's arms fold closed and hold magnetically. No zipper, snap, or button is part of the pattern.

Why does row 2 mention inserting into the side loop?

Inserting the hook into the side loop of the previous double crochet before starting the next stitch closes the gap that increase rounds normally leave. Skipping this step leaves a visible hole at the base of row 2's 10-stitch increase.

How long should the side panel run before moving to the final seam?

The side gusset repeats its 5-12-5 double crochet count per row through row 10. Stop at row 10 and move to sewing the bag to the body with leftover yarn.
