About this pattern

This pattern makes a Bulbasaur amigurumi from 23 crocheted pieces, worked in 100% cotton yarn (150m/25g) with a 1.00 mm hook for the body and a 0.75 mm hook for the tri-layer eyes. Eyes are stitched six times larger than standard, in black, crimson, and white layers. Assembly runs 13 steps, ending with 6 flower petals sewn in place.

Bulbasaur amigurumi built from 23 separate components: three main-body sections (22, 16, and 5 rounds), four legs, an 18-round flower-petal piece, and a three-layer eye assembly worked in black, crimson, and white. The eyes are scaled six times larger than a standard amigurumi eye and stitched with a 0.75 mm hook while the body works up on a 1.00 mm hook. Cotton yarn at 150m per 25g keeps stitches dense enough to hide the polyester wadding underneath. The count that matters most: 23 pieces before assembly starts.

Assembly

Step 1Follow these steps to bring your Bulbasaur to life:
Step 2Attach the body to the back center of the head
Step 3Attach ears symmetrically on top of the head
Step 4Position enhanced eyes slightly above the nose area
Step 5Sew eyes carefully as they’re the focal point of your amigurumi
Step 6Embroider eye highlights and eyebrows
Step 7Embroider nose nostrils and smile
Step 8Attach forelegs to sides near head
Step 9Attach hind legs to back sides
Step 10Embroider turquoise spots on head and body
Step 11Sew 6 petals together (leave 2 rows at bottom unsewn)
Step 12Close flower top, add inner part, and stuff
Step 13Attach flower bulb to back

Tester's notes

1.00 mm and 0.75 mm hooks stay assigned to separate parts: use 1.00 mm only for body pieces and 0.75 mm only for the eye layers, since swapping them loosens stitches and lets the crimson layer show through the white.

23 components need sorting before assembly; use stitch markers to label which of the three Main Pattern sections (22, 16, and 5 rounds) is which once they are off the hook.

Eyes stack three layers (4 rounds crimson inside 3 rounds white inside a black outer shell); stuff each layer lightly before nesting the next inside it or the tri-layer look flattens.

6 flower petals get sewn on per the pattern; pin all 6 in place before stitching any of them down so spacing stays even around the center.

Color changes between Light Turquoise, Turquoise, and Green happen mid-round on several pieces; carry unused yarn inside the stuffing instead of cutting it, since loose ends multiply fast across 23 pieces.

Gauge check

After Round 2 of the main body (12 stitches from a magic circle), check that the fabric lies flat with no visible gap at the center and no curling at the edge.

If stitches gap or the circle puckers, size down or up on the 1.00 mm hook until the fabric is firm enough to fully hide the polyester wadding once stuffed.

If something looks wrong

The eyes look flat instead of domed.
The tri-layer stuffing was skipped between rounds. Unpick the outer black layer, pack wadding behind the white layer, and re-sew the black shell over it.
The flower center pulls off-round after the petals go on.
Petals were sewn on one at a time without checking spacing. Remove them, pin all 6 evenly around the center first, then stitch each one down.
The right foreleg or hind leg looks shorter than the left.
Right Foreleg and Right Hind Leg are logged at 1 round because they mirror the left leg's pattern rather than restate it. Recount against Left Foreleg (11 rounds) and Left Hind Leg (15 rounds) instead of working from the right-side entry alone.
The main body piece cups instead of lying flat.
An increase round was skipped somewhere across the 22 rounds. Check stitch counts row by row against the expected sequence (6, 12, 18) and add any missing increase.

Yarn substitutions

DK-weight acrylicThicker than the pattern's 150m/25g cotton; move up to a 1.25-1.50 mm hook to keep stitches dense, and expect a larger finished Bulbasaur that needs more polyester wadding.
Sport-weight cotton blendClose in thickness to the pattern's cotton; drape stays similar and the 1.00 mm and 0.75 mm hook split can stay as written, though stitch definition softens slightly.
Fingering-weight wool or wool blendThinner than the 150m/25g cotton and drops overall size; drop to a smaller hook to keep stitches tight enough to contain the wadding, and watch gauge more closely since wool has more give than cotton.
FAQs

Questions

Why does the eye piece call for a different hook size than the body?

The eyes use a 0.75 mm hook while the body uses 1.00 mm, producing tighter stitches on the small three-layer eye pieces. That difference stops the crimson and white layers from stretching and showing gaps once stacked inside the black outer layer.

Why are the Right Foreleg and Right Hind Leg listed at only 1 round?

Those entries mark the piece as a mirror of the Left Foreleg (11 rounds) and Left Hind Leg (15 rounds) rather than a separate round-by-round pattern. Work the right-side limbs using the same round counts as their left-side counterparts.

How many pieces need to be finished before assembly starts?

23 components total, including three main-body sections, four legs, the flower petals piece, and the three eye layers repeated for both eyes. Every piece gets stuffed with polyester wadding before the 13-step assembly begins.
