About this pattern

A knit-look wrap sweater worked flat in four panels across sizes XS to 3XL: a 65-chain back panel decreased to 56 rows, two 21-chain front panels increased over 44 rows plus 12 shoulder-strap rows, and a 58-chain piece combining single, half double, and double crochet. Two skeins complete a size small; 5.5 mm and 4.5 mm hooks and a tapestry needle for seaming are required.

This wrap sweater builds from four flat panels: a back piece starting at a chain of 65 and ending, after decreases, at 56 total rows; two front panels that start at a chain of 21 and increase for 44 rows before 12 straight rows form each shoulder strap; and a third piece worked from a chain of 58 that shifts from single crochet to half double crochet to double crochet across the row. Two skeins cover a size small.

Main Pattern

Round 1Skip first 2 chains, double crochet in the third chain and each chain across. Chain one and turn.
Round 2to 4: Work back bar or back loop slip stitches across. Chain one and turn at the end.
Round 5Chain two (this counts as the first stitch), skip the first stitch, then perform back loop double crochets across. Chain one and turn.

Initial Rows

Start as the back panel, with a chain of 65 followed by double crochet row, then work the knit look stitch for 12 rows.

Decrease Rows:

Start decreasing from Row 13. At the end of every back bar double crochet row, work a double crochet decrease. In slip stitch rows, perform back bar slip stitch decreases at the beginning and end of rows as needed.

Repeat the pattern, alternating three slip stitch rows and a double crochet row with decreases at the specified locations until you have 56 rows in total. Fasten off.

Second Front Panel

Start with a chain of 21 and follow a similar pattern to the first front panel but with increases instead of decreases. Work two stitches in the first and last stitch for increase rows.

After reaching 44 rows of increases, work 12 regular rows without increases or decreases for the shoulder strap. Fasten off.

Sleeves Starting Chain: Chain 58.

Round 1Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and the next 18 chains, half-double crochet in the next 19 chains, double crochet in the remaining 19 chains. Chain one and turn.
Round 2to 4: Work back loop slip stitches across. Chain one and turn.
Round 5Increase Row Repeat the stitch pattern of Row 1 (19 single crochets, 19 half-double crochets, 19 double crochets with an increase at the beginning and end). Chain one and turn.

Assembly

Step 1Seam front panels to back, leaving space for armholes.
Step 2Whip stitch sides closed from the bottom to 6.5 inches from the top for armholes.
Step 3Attach sleeves and weave in all loose ends.

Tester's notes

65 chains anchor the back panel; miscounting here throws off every decrease marked from Row 13 onward, so verify the count twice before working the first double crochet row.

56 total rows mark the end of the back panel — stop decreasing once that count is reached, not before, since the decrease sequence is tied to row number, not panel width.

4.5 mm and 5.5 mm hooks serve different parts of this piece; keep both within reach, since swapping between them mid-project is part of the construction.

Back bar and back loop stitches look similar at a glance; work a few stitches slowly at the start of each new section to confirm which loop is loaded before committing to a full row.

No color changes are specified for this pattern; weave in ends only at panel transitions and seams to keep tension even across the finished wrap.

Gauge check

After the first double crochet row of the back panel (65 stitches across), lay the piece flat and compare its width to the intended chest measurement for the chosen size; the row should sit flat without curling at the edges.

If something looks wrong

The front panel edge pulls tight instead of widening on increase rows.
The required two stitches worked into the first and last stitch of the row were likely skipped at one end. Check both edges of each increase row and correct before moving to the next row.
Row count climbs past 56 on the back panel without the shape narrowing.
A decrease was likely skipped on a back bar double crochet row. Recount from Row 13 and confirm a decrease falls at the end of every double crochet row, not only on slip stitch rows.
The edge of the 58-chain piece looks uneven where stitch types meet.
The 19/19/19 split between single, half double, and double crochet was likely miscounted. Place locking stitch markers at chain 19 and chain 38 before starting the row.
Panels won't lie flat after seaming the sides.
The 6.5-inch armhole gap was likely measured inconsistently between the two sides. Lay the piece flat and mark 6.5 inches from the top on both edges before whip stitching.

Yarn substitutions

Worsted-weight cotton blendDrapes heavier and loses some of the knit-look stretch; drop to the 4.5 mm hook throughout and plan on roughly the same 2-skein count for a size small.
Aran-weight acrylic-wool blendClose weight match to the original; keeps the 5.5 mm and 4.5 mm hook split workable, with a slightly warmer fabric and similar yardage needs.
DK-weight yarnProduces a lighter, more fitted wrap; hooks drop to roughly 4 mm and 3.5 mm, and total yardage runs higher than 2 skeins to cover the same row and chain counts.
FAQs

Questions

What size range does this pattern cover?

The pattern includes instructions for XS through 3XL. Materials are listed for 2 skeins at size small; larger sizes require more yarn, though exact yardage isn't broken out per size.

How many total rows make up the back panel?

56 rows, starting from the initial chain of 65 and decreasing from Row 13 onward. Fasten off once Row 56 is complete.

What's the difference between the front panels and the 58-chain piece?

Each front panel starts at a chain of 21 and increases for 44 rows before 12 straight rows form the shoulder strap. The separate 58-chain piece combines single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet across one row instead of following increase or decrease shaping.
