About this pattern

A DK-weight baby hat worked in the round with a 4 mm hook, starting from a magic ring crown and increasing to 20 double crochet stitches before building V-stitch shells through the body. The brim uses a contrasting color in half double crochet. Stitch counts scale by size: 9 HDC for Newborn, 10 HDC for 0–3 Months, 11 HDC for 3–6 Months, and 12 HDC for 6–12 Months.

Crown Section (Increase Rounds)

Round 1Start with a Magic Ring. Chain 2 (counts as first Half Double Crochet), work 9 more Half Double Crochet (HDC) into the ring.Slip stitch to the 2nd chain to close.
Round 2Chain 3 (counts as first Double Crochet). Work 2 Double Crochet (DC) in each of the 10 stitches from Round 1.Slip stitch to the 3rd chain to close.
Round 3Single Crochet (SC) between the last and first DC of Round 2. Chain 3, DC in the same space (first V-stitch).Work (DC, Chain 1, DC) in the spaces between every other DC of Round 2. Slip stitch to the 2nd chain.
Round 4SC in the Chain 1 space of the first V-stitch. Chain 2, work 3 DC in the same space to form the first 4-DC shell.Continue with (SC between V-stitches, 4 DC in the next V-stitch). Slip stitch to the first DC.
Round 5Chain 4 (counts as DC + Chain 1). DC in the last SC of Round 4. Work (Chain 3, V-stitch in the next SC).Slip stitch to the 3rd chain.
Round 6SC in the Chain 1 space of the first V-stitch. Chain 2, 4 DC in the same space (5-DC shell).SC into the top of the 3rd DC of the Round 4 shell. Repeat pattern around and slip stitch to the first DC.
Round 7Chain 4 (counts as DC + Chain 1). DC in the next SC. Work (Chain 4, V-stitch in the next SC).Slip stitch to the 3rd chain.
Round 8SC in the Chain 1 space of the first V-stitch. Chain 2, 6 DC in the same space (7-DC shell).SC into the top of the 3rd DC of the Round 6 shell. Repeat pattern around and slip stitch to the first DC.

Body Section (Straight Rounds)

Round 9Chain 4 (counts as DC + Chain 1). DC in the next SC. Work (Chain 5, V-stitch in the next SC).Slip stitch to the 3rd chain.
Round 10SC in the Chain 1 space of the first V-stitch. Chain 2, 6 DC in the same space (7-DC shell). SC into the top of the 4th DC of the Round 8 shell.Repeat pattern around and slip stitch to the first DC.
Rounds 11–14Repeat Rounds 9 and 10 two more times, ending with a 7-DC shell round (Round 14) to complete the hat length for 0–3 months.

Brim Section (Ribbon/Edge)

Round 15Chain 2. SC in the 3rd DC of the 7-DC shell, SC in the 4th DC, then work 4 DC in the next SC space.Repeat this pattern around. Complete the final 4-DC shell with 3 DC in the starting Chain 2 space. Slip stitch to the 2nd chain.
Round 16Change to white yarn. Chain 3 (counts as first Front Post Double Crochet). Alternate Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) and Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC) around.Slip stitch to the 3rd chain.
Round 17Chain 3. Work FPDC around FPDC and BPDC around BPDC from the previous round. Slip stitch to the 3rd chain.
Round 18Chain 3. Repeat the 1x1 ribbing pattern. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Tester's notes

10 HDC in Round 1 marks the 0–3 month size; count stitches before starting Round 2, since 20 DC only lies flat when the starting count is correct.

Shell counts run 10 shells for 0–3 Months, 9 for Newborn, 11 for 3–6 Months, and 12 for 6–12 Months; place a marker in the first shell of each round to keep the join point consistent.

Color change from main to contrasting brim color happens at the transition into the Brim Section; carry or cut the main color cleanly to avoid bulk at the join.

No stuffing is used in this pattern; the hat holds shape from stitch tension alone, so keep DC and HDC height consistent round to round.

Stitch counts for other sizes: for Newborn, start with 9 HDC in Round 1 and 18 DC in Round 2, giving 9 shells in later rounds. For 0–3 Months, follow this pattern exactly with 10 HDC in Round 1 and 20 DC in Round 2. For 3–6 Months, begin with 11 HDC and 22 DC, creating 11 shells per round. For 6–12 Months, begin with 12 HDC and 24 DC, giving 12 shells per round.

Gauge check

After Round 2, count stitches: 20 DC should sit flat without cupping or rippling for the 0–3 month size.

If the crown cups, DC stitches are too tight; if it ruffles, they are too loose — adjust hook size or tension before starting Round 3.

If something looks wrong

The crown cups instead of lying flat after Round 2.
Round 2 stitch count is off — recount to confirm 20 DC from the 10 HDC of Round 1; too few stitches makes it cup, too many makes it ruffle.
Shells vary in width across the round.
Uneven DC height inside each 4-DC or 7-DC shell changes shell width; keep the same number of loops and hook draw on every DC in the group.
Gaps show between V-stitches.
The Chain 3 space of the V-stitch chain is too loose; tighten the chain immediately after the DC that starts the V so the SC has less room to shift.

Yarn substitutions

Cotton, DK weightHolds shape more crisply than baby DK acrylic or wool blends, so shells sit stiffer; the same 4 mm hook works, but expect less stretch when placing the hat on a baby's head.
Wool-blend, sport weightThinner than DK, so drop to a 3.5 mm hook to keep shell and stitch counts matching the pattern; fabric drapes softer and the finished hat runs smaller unless an extra round is added.
FAQs

Questions

Which round number determines the hat size?

Round 1 sets the size: 9 HDC gives Newborn, 10 HDC gives 0–3 Months, 11 HDC gives 3–6 Months, and 12 HDC gives 6–12 Months. Round 2 then doubles that count in DC, and every shell round after follows from that starting number.

Does the Body Section length change with size?

Rounds 9 through 14 are written for the 0–3 month size, ending on a 7-DC shell round. For Newborn, 3–6 Months, or 6–12 Months, the same repeat structure applies, but shell count follows the 9, 11, or 12 shells set in Round 1.
